On Saturday September 15th, Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue was joined onstage by Dave Grohl during the Voodoo Threauxdown at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles, California. Shorty and the band have played ‘In Bloom’ as part of their sets since at least 2011, and Grohl agreed to sit in on drums for the song.
The performance marked just the second time Gohl’s performed the song since 1994–the only other time was in 2014 during Nirvana’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction. Rolling Stone wrote, “Grohl bashed away, nailing the song’s distinctive snare-tom fills, while the band embellished the original vocal melodies with funky saxophone and trombone lines.”
Shorty first met Dave Grohl and Foo Fighters in 2014 in New Orleans while Grohl was taping an episode of the HBO television series “Sonic Highways,” which featured Shorty sitting in with the band at Preservation Hall. He has since jammed with the Foos at the 2014 Voodoo Arts + Music Fest, in 2015 at Grohl’s birthday show at the L.A. Forum, and he and Orleans Avenue has opened for the band on arena dates in the US and Europe.
