Troy "Trombone Shorty" Andrews was awarded Best Male Performer for the fourth time (and the third year in a row) at the 2012 Big Easy Music Awards. He was also honored as Entertainer of the Year at the 2010 Awards. Troy's friends and collaborators, the Rebirth Brass Band were honored this year as Entertainer of the Year and won for Best Contemporary Brass Band and Best Album for Rebirth of New Orleans. Troy wrote the song "AP Touro" for the album, which also won a Grammmy this year. Rebirth are also featured on the opening track on Trombone Shorty's FOR TRUE, "Buckjump." Congratulations to all the winners!

The 24th Annual Big Easy Music Awards took place April 23, the Monday before Jazz Fest begins in New Orleans. The band will be playing just before Dr. John and Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band on the Acura Stage. Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue's Austin City Limits episode encores on PBS-TV beginning April 21st. The band is joined by special guest Ivan Neville (vocals, keyboards) and Quinten Spears (background vocals) for this performance which originally aired in October 2010.

Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue will be featured in a 2-minute Clip directly preceding the CBS broadcast of the NCAA Final Four, taking place in New Orleans, Saturday March 31 (check local listings). The band was filmed in classic New Orleans settings performing their song, "Do To Me". Mayor Mitch Landrieu is also shown joining Trombone Shorty in welcoming the NCAA Tournament and fans to The Crescent City. A second clip during the CBS Telecast will also feature Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue performing the song live.

The Sunday before filming the intro, Troy participated as a judge for Class Got Brass? A School Brass Band Competition hosted by The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation. Seventeen schools competed and three schools shared the top prizes, while all of the schools that participated were able to share in the total of $30,500.00 worth of instruments for their school band programs. Congratulations to all the students!

Troy's fellow judges included Gregory Davis (Dirty Dozen Brass Band), Ben Jaffe (Preservation Hall Jazz Band), Derrick Tabb (Rebirth Brass Band), trumpeter Greg Stafford, Dr. Michael White, Sammie Williams (Big Sam's Funky Nation), trumpeter Shamarr Allen and Virgil Tille (former St. Augustine High School marching band director).

Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue are nominated for three Big Easy Music Awards: Best Album for FOR TRUE, in addition to Best Contemporary Jazz and Best Male Performer for Troy "Trombone Shorty" Andrews. Last year, Troy was honored with his third Best Male Performer Award (his second win in a row in that category). Also taking place in New Orleans, Troy's ongoing Horns for Schools Project, in collaboration with New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu, has now reached it's fourth school this academic year! On March 19, Troy and the Mayor donated specially designed Trombone Shorty trumpets and trombones to Martin Behrman Charter Academy for Creative Arts and Sciences . Now a tradition, Troy performed for the students joined by the Mayor on trumpet. During the assembly, the Mayor brought a young boy up to the stage to show how small Troy had been when he was first handed a trombone. This school year, Troy and the Mayor have also presented sets of Trombone Shorty Model instruments to KIPP McDonogh 15 Middle School, Warren Easton High School and Einstein Charter School. Troy plans to continue this mission into the future with schools throughout New Orleans. Trombone Shorty played the National Anthem at the NBA Hornets vs. Lakers Game at New Orleans Arena on March 14, followed by a half-time performance with Orleans Avenue. The crowd greeted the hometown heroes with a huge ovation.

The day before, Troy "Trombone Shorty" Andrews collaborated once again with New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu, donating specially designed Trombone Shorty trumpets and trombones to Einstein Charter School as part of Troy's ongoing Horns For Schools project. The school's band students, comprised of students in grades 4-6, performed at the assembly. They were led by the school's Band Director Herman Jones, a music teacher for over 38 years whose past students include Troy. Troy also performed for the students, once again joined by the Mayor on trumpet.

Earlier this school year, Troy and the Mayor presented sets of Trombone Shorty Model instruments to KIPP McDonogh 15 Middle School and Warren Easton High School. Troy plans to continue this mission into the future with schools throughout New Orleans. Troy "Trombone Shorty" Andrews performed at The White House February 21, 2012, as part of the Black History Month celebration, In Performance at the White House: Red, White & Blues; it premieres on PBS Monday, February 27 (check local listings). President Obama began the event by wishing everyone a Happy Mardi Gras and saying "I hear Trombone Shorty brought some beads up from New Orleans." Watch the clip here:

Troy was joined by all star cast including Jeff Beck, Gary Clark, Jr., Shemekia Copeland, Buddy Guy, Warren Haynes, Mick Jagger, B.B. King, Keb Mo, Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks, with Booker T. Jones as music director and band leader. In addition to performances with all the artists playing together (including backing The President on a verse of "Sweet Home Chicago" - watch that clip here:), Troy performed "St. James Infirmary," on his own backed by the house band. The esteemed audience joined Troy in the call-and-response lyrics and he received a standing ovation kicked off by Michelle Obama.

Earlier in the day, Troy participated in a special education program in The White House with Michelle Obama, Keb Mo and Shemekia Copeland. Click here to watch the session:The artists spoke to an audience of students from across the country to discuss the Blues and took part in a Q & A with moderator Bob Santelli and members of the audience. Not included in the video are the closing performances from the artists, where Troy played "When the Saints Go Marching In," bringing everyone to their feet.

Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue are now en route to their debut in Moscow, Russia at the Triumph of Jazz festival, followed by dates in France, England and Spain and also marking the 4th continent they have traveled to in the month of February 2012 alone! Trombone Shorty's For True has been voted to the top of Australia's Rhythms magazine Best of 2011 Readers Poll (February 2012 issue) for Jazz Album of the Year - International. Trombone Shorty also won top honors in the Gig of the Year - International category for his 2011 performance at Australia's Byron Bay Bluesfest. Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue return to Australia for 5 dates (including 2 at Bluesfest) in April.

For True has ranked in the Contemporary Jazz Top 10 since it's September release, with 12 weeks at #1 so far. In a related win, HBO's Treme won for Best Soundtrack (International) - it includes "Ooh Poo Pah Doo" performed by Trombone Shorty (the song was originally a hit for his grandfather, Jessie Hill, when it was first released in 1960).
