The Trombone Shorty Foundation held its annual flagship event “Shorty Fest” Presented by Acura this past Saturday, September 26, but it looked a little different. In the age of social distancing, the party moved online this year and featured 1 hour of performances by Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue, Galactic, Lauren Daigle, and many more. “Virtual Shorty Fest Presented by Acura” was also made possible by the Gia Maione Prima Foundation and other partners.
The event streamed for free nationally on Facebook and IGTV, and was broadcast in New Orleans on WNOL- TV (Nola-38). Thanks to everyone who watched, and if you missed it, you can click here to watch now!
Thanks to Keith Spera and NOLA.com for today’s article about Trombone Shorty and life in New Orleans during the pandemic. An excerpt:
Ordinarily, the 34-year-old Andrews and company are hardcore road warriors. The past six months of being grounded in New Orleans is the longest stretch he’s spent in his hometown in 15 years, by far. For now, he’s enjoying life as a normal human instead of a touring musician.
“The silver lining for me is staying healthy and being able to catch up with my mom. I’ve been touring so long that we missed so much time. And I didn’t realize how much of a break my mind and body could use. When I think of this as a well-deserved rest, I’m all good. If I start to think about, ‘Aw, man, I don’t know when we’re going play again,’ then that becomes stressful. I take the time to relax and read books, play music, play video games, ride my bike. It’s allowing me to reconnect with simple things in life that I forgot about by being on tour every day.”
