On May 30th, 2018 the Sesame Workshop, the non-profit educational organization behind Sesame Street, held its 16th annual gala in New York City. Trombone Shorty was extended a special invitation to preform and was joined on stage by the residents of Sesame Street at the event. The workshop also honored Shorty with his own muppet doppelägnger. The annual event is a “celebration of laughter and learning,” and this years gala spotlighted the incredible resilience of children with the announcement of the new Joan Ganz Cooney Fund for Vulnerable Children which will expand the Sesame Street in Communities initiative which supplies caregivers and community service providers the tools to give families across the country the necessary resources to ensure a healthy start to the lives of their children.
Katie Couric co-hosted the event with Sesame Street stars Elmo, Abby Cadabby, Big Bird, Oscar the Grouch with special guest appearances by a full cast of muppets.
